October 2002: Newsletter Autumn…changes in the air: Change your clocks back one hour on Oct. 27, and while you’re at it, change the date on your calendar for OxACT’s first production of the year. LUV
by Murray Schisgal will take place late January-early February! Due to scheduling conflicts (just a part of community theater!) the production date has been changed from the original Nov. 8-10 dates. Want to know more about the play? LUV is one of Murray Schisgal’s most successful and beloved plays. "One of the most lively and hilarious American plays," according to the executive director of Virginia’s American Century Theater. In 1964 LUV (901performances) ran neck-and-neck on Broadway with Neil Simon’s “The Odd Couple”(964 performances). LUV’s Broadway cast consisted of Eli Wallach, Anne Jackson and Alan Arkin (later replaced by Gene Wilder), directed by Mike Nichols, who won a Tony award. LUV was recognized as a " 'brainy’, off-beat comedy of substance" compared to Simon’s "out-of-town audience-pleasing one-liner orgy." Harry Berlin, a despondent suicide wannabe, is prevented from jumping off a bridge by an old - and somewhat forgotten - college chum, Milt Manville. Milt, a prosperous stockbroker (who deals in second-hand bric-a-brac as a sideline), listens sympathetically to Harry’s tales of woe. Milt himself is frustrated: he has fallen in love with a young woman named Linda, but his neurotic wife Ellen stands in his way. Presently Ellen appears, and Milt is inspired to bring Harry and Ellen together, so he can be free to marry his true love. The plot takes many twists and turns - we won’t give away the ending! A classic comedy, the play is rich with physical humor and sight gags. The 1980’s musical What About Love? starring Nathan Lane was based on LUV. Auditions for LUVwill be held Thurs., Nov. 7 at 7 p.m. & Sat., Nov. 9, at 10 a.m., at the Oxford College for Women, (aka “OxCollege”) the future home of the Oxford Community Arts Center. It is located at 10 S. College, at the corner of High St. and across from the BP station. The front entrance will be open. High energy, comic parts are available for 2 men and 1 woman ages 25-60. Scripts are available at the Lane Library reference desk.
A note from Susan Meikle, our new president: I am still relatively new to community theater. My first involvement was as "kid wrangler" and props assistant for Nuncrackers. My daughter Claire was in the play, and as I realized what a rich experience it was for her, I wanted to help out as my "contribution." One thing led to another, and here I am, two years later, as president of the OxACT Board of Directors! Community theater offers rich experiences for all of us -not only for the actors, lighting technicians, backstage assistants and all who contribute to making a story come to life - but for those of us who watch our neighbors become transformed on stage. When I first learned that my mother-in-law played the lead in her community theater production (the Avon Playmakers in Avon, CT) of Desk Set in the 1960s, I was amazed and enchanted! I get a similar feeling watching my colleagues on stage. Thank you for helping us make Oxford Area Community Theater successful. Susan Meikle, president, board of directors. Whom you will only see backstage, not onstage!
